Kids turning their lives around at Westmont and Boynton High
As reported by the June 8th article in the Campbell Times, seven students received scholarships for turning their grades and their lives around. The Campbell Kiwanis Club gave $1,000 scholarships for these at risk students from Campbell and Boynton High Schools.
It is so nice to see real stories about kids rising above their circumstances to achieve so much. In one touching story a student had to take 8 classes, work at a retirement home and raised a steer for Future Farmers of America. Her father said "Nikki’s work shocked me and made me take a look at myself and turn some things in my life." It's amazing what an effect our kids have on us! In another story, Bryan had to take night courses while running his own landscaping business. He plans on continuing his education with college, as do all of the students in this article. A recent study by A.C. Nielsen Co cites the number of minutes per week that the average child watches television is 1,680. That equates to 28 hours per week - a part time job. The story about these kids really highlights how active participation in your life can really pay dividends. The success these students had was helped in large part by the members of the Campbell Kiwanis Club, and the school teachers and counselors. It is very evident how passionate they are in helping these students succeed. In the words of one counselor "Sredanovich. “The switch goes off and they turn everything around. It’s great keeping up with them so that we can see how they overcome these obstacles." I look forward to some more school success stories soon!
